The GME Office will close on Friday, May 25 at noon and reopen on Tuesday, May 29 at 8 am in observance of Memorial Day.

As the ACGME works to become more responsive in its provision of timely and complete data, there will be an increasing focus on annual data collection and outcomes. Over the next several months, our data systems will change to accommodate these new data collection needs. As we integrate our data collection systems and move to the Next Accreditation System (NAS), there will be extended times when our systems will be unavailable. ADS will be unavailable from June 9-12 to switch over to the 2012-2013 academic year. If you are preparing for a site visit, please be cognizant of the downtime and complete all necessary documentation prior to June 9. Beginning June 13 our data systems will reflect the 2012-2013 academic year, and all residents will have an unconfirmed status (...

The new stop will be added to the AM and PM routes, and the express bus will now stay on Trent Drive (crossing Erwin Road) before turning onto Flowers Drive. The change has no effect on the schedule or other stops served.

Brian Williams, Duke's transportation demand management coordinator, said the added stops make it easier for Duke community members, especially staff and faculty working in or near Duke Clinics, to use an alternative commute.

Categorization of the Common Program Requirements for July 2013 Implementation of the ACGME’s Next Accreditation System

The phased implementation of the ACGME’s Next Accreditation System (NAS) will begin in July 2013 for seven accredited specialties (emergency medicine, internal medicine, neurological surgery, orthopaedic surgery, pediatrics, diagnostic radiology, and urology) and related subspecialties. The NAS requires categorization of the ACGME’s Common Program Requirements to clearly identify Core Requirements and Detail Requirements pertaining to structure, resources, and educational processes, as well as Outcome Requirements. Categorizing Core and Detail Requirements for structure, resources, and processes will allow the ACGME to...

As the end of the academic year approaches, the ACGME encourages programs not only to review data for graduating residents and fellows, but to ensure their data has been migrated to the appropriate program in the event of a resident transfer. To verify whether a data transfer was performed, log into the Case Log System, proceed to the program setup tab, and choose “Resident” – “Resident Transfer Request.” You will be provided with a history of all residents who have had data transferred into your program. If a transfer resident is not listed, you may initiate the transfer by clicking “Request Resident Transfer” and following the prompts. Please Note: for general surgery – if a transfer in question was a preliminary resident, that data can only be transferred if he...

The John A. Feagin Jr., MD, Leadership Program and Endowment have been created to honor John A. Feagin, Jr., MD. Duke University Emeritus Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Feagin’s dedication to developing ethical leaders of character is the inspiration for this effort. This program benefits leadership development education at Duke University.

Duke Sports Medicine is leading this initiative in partnership with the Duke University Athletic Association, the Fuqua School of Business, and Duke Corporate Education, as well as other leadership-oriented organizations.  The program consists of four leadership sessions; attendance at the Feagin Leadership Forum; personal leadership coaching and the development of a team leadership project....

Later this month the ACGME will formally notify accredited programs in emergency medicine, internal medicine, neurological surgery, orthopaedic surgery, pediatrics, diagnostic radiology, and urology, about site visit changes due to implementation of the next accreditation system in July 2013.

The next accreditation system will result in significant changes in the accreditation process. For most core and subspecialty programs in these specialties, the next regularly scheduled accreditation site visit will be postponed, rescheduled, and replaced with the first Self Study Site Visit under the next accreditation system. After a program’s first Self Study Site Visit has occurred, these Self Study Site Visits will occur at intervals up to 10 years.

Dr. Darrell G. Kirch addresses GIA group on the direction of change in academic medicine.

In this leadership plenary address delivered to attendees of the 2012 Group on Institutional Advancement (GIA) National Professional Development Conference, AAMC President and CEO Dr. Darrell G. Kirch makes the case for the transformation of academic medicine. Our current economic and political realities suggest a burning platform ripe for change. Is your birthday coming up? Renew your medical license
Each year on or before your birthday your license must be renewed. You may renew online http://www.ncmedboard.org as early as 60 days BEFORE your birthday The GME Office must have a hard copy of the license certificate BEFORE it expires (not a print out or receipt from the on line training registration process at the NC Board site). Failure to provide this documentation results in automatic corrective action. If you have a full license, you are responsible for providing the GME office with a hard copy of this certificate; if you have a resident training license, the NC Medical Board automatically sends the GME Office your renewal.

For the first time, a new policy of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), effective on January 1, 2012, establishes limits to the time that can elapse between a physician’s completion of residency training and achievement of Board Certification. The policy establishes a window of no fewer than three years and no more than seven years between training and certification. Within that timeframe, the maximum time allowed will depend on the specialty.

The flexibility in the time limit recognizes that 24 ABMS Member Boards, each certifying physicians in a specialty, have different requirements for Board Certification and offer their certification exams at different intervals. Each of the 24 ABMS Member Boards must choose the time limit by April 16,...

Due to a N.C. Utilities Commission change to accommodate a growing population, the Triangle area will be required to use 10-digit dialing (area code, plus telephone number) beginning April 1.

The utilities commission approved the addition of the new area code – 984 – to accommodate the need for additional telephone numbers in the geographic area currently served by area code 919.

Because of the new area code, callers will be required to dial 10 digits (area code, plus seven-digit phone number) on landline and cellular phones. If callers do not use the new dialing procedure, their call will not be completed, and they will get a recording to try again.

The change does not affect...

The RRC for Family Medicine (in partnership with the American Board of Family Physicians) has submitted and received approval from the ACGME Board of Directors for a pilot project that will examine the length of residency education in family medicine.

Specifically, the purpose of the pilot is to examine whether extending the length of family medicine residency education to four years through the development of innovative education paradigms further prepares family physicians to serve as highly effective personal physicians in a high performance health care system.

Additional details of the pilot, including the application process, will be posted to the RRC for Family Medicine web page within the coming weeks. Once the details are posted, the links will be included in an...

Diagnostic Radiology

  • The deadline for entering current graduating residents’ case log data has been extended from August 1 to September 15. It is extremely important that the RRC for Diagnostic Radiology has accurate data for all current residents. Please review the existing data for current residents and make any updates by March 31. Final data for graduating residents must be entered no later than September 15 each year.

Resident Survey

  • The ACGME Resident Survey resumed in January and continues through June 2012. The second reporting period is now open and programs in this period have been contacted. Beginning this year, all core specialty and subspecialty programs, regardless of size, will be surveyed.
  • Unlike previous years, more than one version of the survey will be administered, so a sample general survey is unavailable. The Resident Survey is composed of questions selected from a bank of survey questions and, depending on resident responses and education level, residents and fellows may not see the same questions. The survey continues to focus on general content areas (duty hours, faculty,...
