Annual Fit Testing Required

Are you required to wear a tight-fitting respirator (e.g., an N95 respirator) at work? If so, annual fit testing is required. Fit testing ensures that the make and model of respirator you are using provides you with adequate respiratory protection.

New fit testing opportunities are available! For the next three months, team members can schedule fit test appointments at the Duke South Employee Occupational Health and Wellness (EOHW) clinic via the fit test scheduler link: https://lsw.duhs.duke.edu/fittestscheduler.

The fit test scheduler is updated as locations and times for fit testing are added. Continue checking the scheduler for additional opportunities. Information regarding fit test sessions can be found at: https://www.safety.duke.edu/sites/default/files/UpcomingFitTestSessions.pdf.

Important Notes:

  • Bring your Duke ID badge to your fit test.
  • Any growth of facial hair that comes between the sealing surface of the respirator and the face is not permitted. If necessary, please shave before you come.
  • Do NOT smoke within 60 minutes of your appointment.
  • Employees who are required to wear a respirator for protection from airborne pathogens must complete the online training course IH196 (“Respiratory Protection for Airborne Pathogens”) in Duke’s Safety Management System (SMS) annually. Other respirator users should log into the SMS to see required training courses.

Please contact OESO at 919-684-5996 or ohs.oeso@dm.duke.edu for further questions or assistance related to fit testing or training. Please contact EOHW at 919-684-3136, option 2 for questions regarding respirator medical clearance.
